The Power of Mentorship: Insights from Bridget Cravens-Neely

In our latest episode of Coffee Can't Fix Everything, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Bridget Cravens-Neely, MBA, CDE, CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa, to discuss a subject close to both of our hearts—mentorship and its impact on mental health.

Bridget brought a wealth of knowledge and personal experience that illuminated the effects mentorship can have on mentors and mentees. Here are some of the key insights from our conversation:

Mentorship is a Two-Way Street:

Bridget emphasized that mentorship isn't just beneficial for the mentee; mentors gain just as much from the relationship. “Just as much as the mentor is giving to the mentee, the mentee is giving to the mentor.” This reciprocal nature enriches the lives of both mentor and mentee, fostering personal growth and emotional resilience.

The Role of Emotions in Mentorship:

One of the many points Bridget made was about the emotional investment required in mentorship. She described it as a relationship where both mentor and mentee give and receive, making the connection deeply enriching and emotionally demanding.

Mentorship as a Vehicle for Mental Health Improvement:

We talked about how mentorship can serve as a critical tool for enhancing mental health. Bridget shared how her own experiences with mentors helped her navigate through personal challenges and how she now uses those lessons to guide others. “It was one of my mentors who was my high school cheerleading coach...she became a core mentor for me because she was the first person to sit me down and tell me about my anger and how it was going to continue to hinder me.”

Overcoming Barriers to Mentorship:

Bridget touched on common barriers that potential mentors face, such as the misconception that they don't have enough time. She argued effectively that making time for mentorship is possible and deeply rewarding, urging our listeners to reconsider their ability to impact others positively.

The Personal Impact of Mentorship:

Throughout the interview, Bridget shared personal anecdotes that highlighted her journey from being an "angry young teenager" to a leader driven by a passion for community service and advocacy. These stories not only made our discussion relatable but also showcased the transformative power of having the right support at the right time.

As we wrapped up the conversation, Bridget left us with some parting wisdom about the importance of being present and consistent in the lives of those we mentor. She stressed that the simple act of showing up can make a monumental difference in someone's life.

This episode was informative and deeply inspiring. It reminded me of the incredible impact that mentorship can have on our mental health and overall well-being. For anyone interested in learning more about Bridget's work or considering becoming a mentor, I highly encourage reaching out and exploring how you might make a difference.
