Uniting for Health Equity: My City My Health 2024

Hey Healthy Insights Readers!

I hope this edition of Healthy Insights finds you well and inspired. Today, I’m thrilled to take you on a journey through the story of My City My Health (MCMH), an initiative close to my heart and one that has grown beyond my wildest expectations. As we prepare for our third annual conference here in Des Moines, I wanted to share the essence of this movement and its impact on our community.

The Genesis of My City My Health

MCMH began as a dream fueled by personal experiences and a desire to effect change. My journey into health equity was deeply personal. It started when my mom, facing severe health challenges, moved to live with me in Des Moines. Her fight with blindness, breast cancer, and kidney failure opened my eyes to the harsh realities many face within our healthcare system. Thankfully, she’s doing well today, but her battle was a catalyst for change in my life and career.

Initially, The Healthy Project was just a podcast where I connected with people across the globe. But seeing my mom's fight up close led me to shift focus toward more pressing issues like racism in healthcare and cultural competency. This pivot in my mission led to the birth of My City My Health, a conference aimed at addressing these very issues on a larger scale.

Growing the Movement

From its inception, MCMH has aimed to create a platform where health professionals and community members can engage in meaningful dialogue about health equity. The conference’s success has been remarkable, and we’ve expanded our reach beyond Des Moines to cities like Iowa City and Minneapolis.

This year, My City My Health Des Moines 2024 promises to be bigger and better. We’ve outgrown our previous venue and will be hosting the event at the River Center, thanks to the overwhelming support from our community. This year’s conference will feature five panels, each focusing on critical issues such as immigrant health, inclusive healthcare, mental health, Black maternal health, and health equity at work.

Why You Should Attend

The panels this year are packed with incredible professionals who bring diverse perspectives and invaluable insights. Our goal is not only to foster discussion but to equip attendees with actionable ideas to improve their communities and organizations. The conversations might be uncomfortable at times, but they are necessary for driving change.
